From the Bagharati mountains according to Hindu mythology, King Bhagiratha believed that the goddess Ganga could bring salvation to his ancestors who had been cursed by a seer. As a result of his religious austerities, he descended from Heaven to Earth, through Shiva, who submerged the stormy flow of Ganga through his long hair.

At an altitude of 3,900 meters in the Uttarkkhand region is the Gomukh (cow’s tongue) Glacier, where the Baghirathi River is born, according to mythology this was the place where Shiva helped Ganga to descend to Earth, located 18 km from Gangotri, one of the four holy and most important points for the thousands of pilgrims who come to visit this place every year.

Formerly called the gate of the Ganges and according to mythology, Haridwar is one of the four places where the elixir of immortality fell, the Kumbha Mela religious festival is held here every three years, and once every 12 years the Maha Kumbha Mela is celebrated.

The Ganges leaves the mountains and escapes with force continuing its way towards the valley.
