Conference “Egypt 1909. The journey of the Amatllers to the Land of the Pharaohs”. (Church of Sant Domènec de Tortosa)

On February 4, 1909, Antoni Amatller and his daughter Teresa embarked on a six-week trip to Egypt and Sudan, accompanied by their friend Josep Garí, their daughter Mercedes, and the maid and trusted person of the family. Amatller, Justa Sanz Sanjuan.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, although they were still a minority, there were already many people who could afford this type of trip. The uniqueness of the Amatllers’ journey lies precisely in the amount of information that has come down to us today.

A great traveler, and photography enthusiast, this thriving chocolate industrialist often traveled accompanied by his camera. The Fundació Institut Amatller d’Art Hispànic, created by his daughter, preserves the two hundred negatives that the businessman made during this trip.

This exhibition is a selection of these snapshots that capture the experience of the Amatllers, from the voyage aboard the steamer Malwa, to their return on March 17.

Produced by B the travel brand in collaboration with the Amatller Hispanic Art Foundation, the exhibition “Egypt 1909. The Amatllers’ Journey to the Land of the Farafons” can be visited from 6pm on September 3 at the headquarters of the Baix Ebre Regional Historical Archive, in the Royal Schools. It will remain open until September 30.

The conference will feature:
