Documentary Screening from the Official Competition · Art, Culture and Music

A screening that brings together two stories in which art becomes a way of understanding the world, memory and identity, through two very different artistic journeys.

“Dora Fugh Lee: A Life in Art” (27’), directed by E. Samantha Cheng, explores the life of Chinese artist Dora Fugh Lee, born into a noble family and a direct descendant of Empress Xiaoxianchun. Her life unfolded during one of the most turbulent periods in Chinese history, marked by Emperor Puyi’s abdication, the Japanese invasions, World War II and the Chinese Civil War.

Through her personal and artistic journey, the documentary reveals how Dora remained true to her identity and her art amid profound political and social change. Considered one of the last great representatives of Chinese Literati painting, her story invites us to reflect on art as a form of resistance and personal expression.

“On Melting Snow” (73’), directed by Mojtaba Bahadori, follows the work of artist Sophie Cauvin, who for more than three decades has travelled through landscapes transformed by time and by political borders created by humankind. Through her artistic journey, Cauvin gathers fragments of memory from a divided planet and brings them together through her creations.

Two films that connect art, memory, identity and place, inviting us to look at the world through the perspective of art and the stories it can preserve.
