Synopsis

At the dawn of civilization Western Europe was a primeval world. High mountains, dark valleys, swampy flatlands and estuaries shaped the lives of the few humans who found shelter in what used to be a truly wild territory. Today almost every bit of this land reverberates with the presence of our modern world. True wilderness retreated, shrunk and disappeared. Forests were conquered and rivers were tamed. In the easter corner of northern Italy, a 170km-long body of water still claims its right to flow through unrestricted alpine valleys and alluvial forests all the way to the sea. Indeed, Tagliamento is a river like no other. The mountains and the valleys of its water system are still resonating with the calls of rare and iconic animals. Here the wolf, the lynx and the jackal are not only the protagonists of ancient tales but a vivid presence preserving the balance of life between predators and preys. Its very large and unique riverbed consisting in a myriad of intertwined channels, its crystal-clear waters teeming with life along with the absence of artificial embankments make the Tagliamento the last wild river of Europe.
