Synopsis

Chad's remote northeast contains two of the most extraordinary and least-visited landscapes on Earth - the Ennedi, an ancient sandstone plateau of towering rock formations and prehistoric rock art, and the Tibesti, a volcanic massif of calderas, basalt pinnacles, and dramatic mountain peaks. Together they form what could be called the “Soul of the Sahara” – an area of the world that few have seen. With no infrastructure, extreme temperatures, and political instability, access by land is brutally difficult. Only by helicopter does the journey become possible in any meaningful sense, opening terrain unreachable by road and revealing the landscape in its overwhelming scale - endless dune seas, rust-red sandstone cathedrals, and hidden oases. It is where remoteness, fragility, and historical depth come together. Rock art thousands of years old remains largely unstudied. The Ennedi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site still largely unexcavated. The political situation is unstable and very few people will ever see this place. This film conveys something beyond travel. The aerial cinematography captures the sheer scale of emptiness, the sudden discovery of life and ancient human presence within it, and the profound stillness of landing in a landscape that exists entirely outside the modern world. It is a document of somewhere that may not remain accessible. There is an urgency and beauty that stays with an audience long after watching.

Objectives

Goals of this film primarily are preservation and recognition – to protect what the film documents. The Ennedi and Tibesti are largely unstudied, politically fragile, and at risk from illegal mining and instability. Bringing international attention to the many unique elements of the area can strengthen the case for greater archaeological investment, conservation funding, and diplomatic protection. This place matters. It hopefully inspires the next generation of explorers and storytellers. Genuine discovery and exploration are still possible. There are important stories to be told.
