Synopsis
*This is a non-final version. We are currently finishing the post-production process — it is still missing some graphics, sound design, color correction, and the addition of the original soundtrack. "Sense Timó" is a documentary that blends the thrill of sailing with an urgent mission for marine conservation. The story begins on the beaches of Menorca, where Olivia Mandle, a young activist passionate about the oceans, introduces us to a special event: the circumnavigation of Menorca aboard a patí català—a unique sailboat that allows for fast, rudderless navigation. It’s at that same speed that our protagonists aim to advance awareness and protection of the sea. The patí català regatta is not only a sporting competition but also an environmental initiative. Participants aren’t just racing for victory—they’re also competing to collect the most marine waste, with a prize awarded, highlighting the dual purpose of the event. Through aerial footage and moments of preparation, we feel the excitement and nerves before the regatta begins. During the journey around Menorca, we meet Gerard Esteva, president of UFEC; Rafel Figuerola, the regatta’s director; and the participants who live alongside Olivia aboard the Santa Eulàlia, a hundred-year-old schooner from the Maritime Museum of Barcelona. The documentary also emphasizes the camaraderie among participants. During a dinner on the Santa Eulàlia, stories and passions for the sea are shared, highlighting the freedom of sailing on a patí català and the contrast between sailing and motorboating. This moment strengthens the sense of community and shared commitment to marine conservation. A challenge arises when the Jelly Cleaner devices—designed to collect waste—fail due to the speed of the patí català. Olivia and Gerard work together to develop a more resistant prototype, showing the constant innovation and adaptation required in their environmental mission. As the regatta progresses, Olivia and Gerard engage in a reflective conversation about the importance of sustainability and how the patí català can be a powerful vehicle to spread an urgent climate message. They set a new goal: to amplify their voice through this discipline. Back in Barcelona, Olivia takes sailing lessons on a very special patí català, equipped with sensors to measure environmental parameters. Her instructor is Nina Hoareau, a scientist from the Institute of Marine Sciences. This sequence emphasizes the connection between sport and science, showing how the patí català can become a tool for oceanographic research. Water samples reveal high levels of pollution, underscoring the urgency of protecting the Mediterranean Sea. The narrative culminates with the upcoming America's Cup in Barcelona. Olivia and Gerard see this global platform as a unique opportunity to amplify their sustainability message. In the end, they succeed in rallying more than 300 patins catalans to sail with a conservation slogan during the regatta.
