Synopsis

The year is 2070 and the global temperature has risen by +2°C. 30% of humanity now lives in areas where the average temperature is over 29°C, and 19% of the Earth's surface is warmer than the Sahara in 2020.

Following the example of the Scandinavian peoples of yesteryear, native communities in hot deserts travel by cross-country skis to reach other villages and trade goods. They owe their survival to their ability to adapt and their ancestral knowledge of irrigation, housing, heat management, etc.

It could all be pure fiction, but recent climatic events are encouraging us to prepare for it. Edition #01 of the XCSS climate can't wait project has chosen to test the broad outlines of this in May 2022 in Hassilabiad (Morocco). The participants, pioneers of cross-country skiing on sand, took part in an epic journey of solidarity and sport to find keys to resilience and climate adaptation by learning from the desert peoples. The film L'épopée du ski sur sable, produced by Teten Prod, retraces the early stages of this long adventure.

Objectives

To tackle climate change, the XCSS climate can't wait project aims to encourage cooperation (intergenerational, intercultural, international) with the aim of finding keys to climate resilience and adaptation by immersing oneself in and exchanging ideas with rural communities in arid zones in different parts of the world.
The project is being run by our not-for-profit organisation, XCSS - CROSS COUNTRY SKIING SAND, which has been accredited 1% for the Planet: the aim is to raise awareness and encourage action by using sport as a unifying force and driving force. The values of sport and the Olympics, embodied by the project's patron, Gwendal PEIZERAT, should help to tackle the issues mentioned above. XCSS climate can't wait is part of the United Nations Decade for the Restoration of Ecosystems.
Cross-country skiing on sand and our skis specifically designed for use on sand (desert or beach) are intended to be a responsible sport and/or tourist activity that is accessible, easily reproducible and respectful of natural environments and local communities --> ? here's a short video explanation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t55AfXa44wk
Our editions #01 and #02 took place in the Moroccan Sahara: the desert offers beneficial opportunities that we need to promote to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. As part of our XCSS project, we are targeting SDGs 2, 3, 5, 6, 11, 13 and 17 for our impact measurements.
