Terres Festival will host the screening and presentation of La hora robada (The Stolen Hour), a documentary project examining the consequences of overtourism in Gran Canaria and its impact on local communities.
What happens when a destination welcomes millions of visitors while part of its population cannot access decent housing? Taking this question as its starting point, the documentary brings together the voices of young people, workers, community organisations and local residents who describe how tourism is transforming their surroundings, shaping their everyday lives and affecting their prospects for the future.
The project’s co-director, Pablo Santiago, will present the documentary’s creative process and engage in a conversation with the audience about some of the major challenges associated with the current tourism model. These include rising housing costs, job insecurity, pressure on natural resources and the need to move towards a fairer, more balanced and sustainable form of tourism.
The event is aimed especially at teenage and young audiences from Tortosa’s secondary schools. Conceived as a space for reflection and debate, the session will explore the defining conflicts of our time and the power of audiovisual storytelling to give communities a voice, encourage critical awareness and help transform reality.
