SUMMARY:Screening – Official Competition (Documentaries)
DESCRIPTION:Aníbal, the architect of Seville. Paco Ortiz, Spain, 2024 (77’)\nThis is the story of a man and his dream. It is about how a Sevillian icon was built, being nowadays one of the most interesting and worldwide known architectural buildings. This is Anibal Gonzalez’s and the Spanish Square story.\nArturo Pérez-Reverte says that “nobody could ever come up with a city like Seville”. The truth is that there was a time when some chosen men had the chance to transform the physionogmy of the city and create new identity symbols in a millennial city. Since then, Seville has a pending debt with Regionalism. Justice has not been done and the style that nowadays shapes the image of the city itself and the nest that wraps the sublime monumentality have not been acknowledged yet. And it was Anibal Gonzalez who started and lead this movement that perfectly connects with the Sevillian personality, arising as its own style. Seville would not be the same without Anibal’s work and his buildings are already part of the universal history as a legacy that nowadays is worldwide admired.\n \nEXTRAORDINARY VOYAGES GALAPAGOS (3:43’)\n“Extraordinary Voyages Galapagos” is an international series of short documentaries that explore our world through its natural and cultural heritage.\nFrom San Cristóbal to Santa Cruz to Fernandina and Isabela, the Galapagos Islands are a spectacular and unique experience.\nThis jewel in the middle of the Pacific is one of the last places on earth where ecosystems have remained intact, untouched by humans.\nOnly 3% of the surface of the archipelago is inhabited by man. Culture and nature are one, animals and man coexist, life teems in the air, on land and underwater.\nWelcome to what is one of the last paradises on earth.\n \nTHE LAST CROSSING – POINT OF NO RETURN (21:20’)\nEurope has a problem with the assimilation, management, regularization, and integration of refugees and immigrants. At a time when there is significant debate, polarization, and political instrumentalization regarding immigration, particularly illegal immigration, and the focus of politicians and the media is on the Mediterranean Sea, I wanted to highlight the critical and almost dystopian situation of illegal immigrants attempting to cross the English Channel.\nThousands of illegal immigrants, including families with children and unaccompanied minors, are hiding in the forests near Calais and Dunkirk in France. The United Kingdom has become their last hope for starting a new life after failing to obtain residency, work permits, or refugee status in Europe.\nThe illegal crossing of the English Channel with smugglers is dangerous, and the French police are determined to stop their journey. Even if they manage to cross, the new and controversial UK immigration law, which raises concerns about its impact on basic human rights and asylum rights, poses the risk of being sent back.\nThis raises the question: Are we reaching a point of no return in how Europe and the United Kingdom treat illegal immigrants, dehumanizing them and failing to find a solution to a problem that continues to persist and potentially worsen?\nIn this report, Point of No Return witnesses life in the Calais camps and accompanies the volunteers and activists of Utopia 56, an independent network that provides assistance and information 24/7 and monitors police conduct and compliance with basic protection protocols for migrants.\n
